Kuusamo (1) 2005/6

Andreas Kuettel of Switzerland beats out two World Cup champions in Adam Malysz and Janne Ahonen to win his first ever World Cup event in the season opener in Kuusamo, Finland.

The 26 year-old recorded jumps of 139.5 metres and 135.0 metres to win the event by nearly 13 points from current champion Ahonen.

Consistency was the key as everyone tried to work off the summer rust, and some managed it better than most. Some of those who couldn't manage it included Michael Uhrmann of Germany, who having jumped only half a metre less than Kuettel in the first round could only muster 115.5 metres in the second round (the worst of the round), plummeting him down to 14th place. Going the other way were Lars Bystoel and Harri Olli. Both soared over 140 metres in the second round after poor first round efforts under 130 metres.
